Children’s House Guide

Gaby Brausam

Gaby is in her 24st year at HPMS. She earned her Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) Primary Diploma from the Montessori Center of Minnesota in 1994.

Gaby has worked with pre-school- and kindergarten-age children for 40 years, starting as a state certified teacher in Germany, then in Saint Paul as a Kindergarten teacher, a Montessori Assistant teacher, and currently as a Children’s House Guide.

Gaby has a deep commitment to and understanding of the needs of the child. She loves teaching and learning. She continues to thrive in her work with the children, and the children continue to thrive in her care!

Children’s House Guide

Jenny Olson

Jenny is in her 16th year at HPMS. She earned her Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) Primary  Diploma from the Montessori Center of Minnesota, and her M.Ed. from Loyola University in Maryland in 2003. Jenny earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Theater Arts from Mankato State University in 2001.

Jenny began her career at HPMS as an Assistant teacher, then as the Aftercare Program Guide, and since 2009, as a Children’s House Guide.

Montessori teaching runs in Jenny’s family: she herself attended a Montessori school.  Jenny’s mother was a Guide for over 20 years in St. Cloud, and her sister is a Primary Guide in California.  Jenny’s oldest son attended HPMS, and her younger son is currently in Gaby’s room. Jenny has a wonderful rapport with the children and understands their needs.

Afternoon Program Guide

Nan Santos

Nan is in her 3rd year as our Afternoon Program Guide. Nan earned her Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) Assistants Training Certificate in 2005.
Nan has worked in Montessori environments, a children's farm school and as a Toddler Teacher before joining HPMS in 2014. Nan has created a warm and beautiful environment for the children which includes a weather center, nature area, and puppet theater. In addition, the all-time favorite activities for young children are offered: dress-up, house, doll house, building blocks, trains, and of course books, puzzles, board games and cards, arts and crafts. Nan has been learning about and working with young children most of her life. She provides a loving and nurturing environment for the children in her care.

Children's House Assistant

Daralyn Sachs

Daralyn is in her 8th year at HPMS. She earned her Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) Primary Diploma from the Montessori Center of Minnesota in 2016 and her AMI Assistants Certification in 2014. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration and Two Dimensional Studio Art from the University of St. Thomas in 1993.

Daralyn’s Montessori journey began with her two boys. While her children attended HPMS, Daralyn volunteered at the school, and soon became deeply involved in our Art Day program.

Toddler Community Guide

Sarah Terrell

Sarah earned her Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) Assistants to Infancy Diploma (0-3 years) from the Montessori Center of Minnesota in 2015.  Sarah earned her AMI Primary Diploma in 2009.
Sarah’s journey in Montessori education began with her daughter and Sarah has been hooked ever since! Sarah’s introduction to HPMS came when she worked as a Nanny for a family whose twin daughters were attending the school. The more Sarah became acquainted with the staff, the method and the children, the more she wanted HPMS to be a part of her own daughter’s life. Sarah has worked at HPMS as a volunteer, Assistant Teacher and for many years as the Aftercare Program Guide.

Toddler Community Assistant

Gina Hoffman earned her Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) Assistants Training Certificate in 2016.  She has a B.S. from Saint Catherine University in Childhood Enrichment.

Stephanie Clark

Stephanie begins her 4th year as Director of HPMS and her 18th year with close ties to the school. She earned her Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) Primary Diploma from the Montessori Center of Minnesota and her M.Ed. from Loyola University in Maryland in 2005-06. Stephanie earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Macalester College in 1988.

Like Daralyn and Sarah, Stephanie began her Montessori journey as a parent. The amazing experience her oldest son had at the school was enough to change the course of her own life. While her second son attended HPMS, Stephanie worked as an Assistant at the school and then took the primary training. Before returning “home” to HPMS, Stephanie worked as a Guide in three Montessori schools (with long commutes!) across the Twin Cities.

It is with deep appreciation for Wendy Warren, who taught and lead HPMS for 35 years (and is our beloved sub-Guide), that Stephanie takes on her role at HPMS.

Meet the HPMS Board of Directors

Mary Amel, President

I fell in deep hope (and love) with the first Montessori book I read named The Secret of Childhood.  Stunned by Dr. Montessori’s belief in the aptitude of young children and the respect due them, I contacted the local training center in Minnesota.  After finishing the course work I realized that my heart was not in the classroom;  it was, in supporting the adults who are parenting and guiding these children.  My two sons were at Highland Park Montessori through their kindergarten year.  I was on the board in those years and beyond.  My nieces and nephews also attended HPMS. I am honored to be part of the new board of talented and dedicated parents and staff who are committed to sustaining and expanding this dream continuing to come true.

Tina Marisam, Vice President

I am excited to be a new member of HPMS's Board.  My partner Jason and I have two children in Gaby's classroom this year - Flora, age 5, and Waldo, age 2.5.  We moved to Saint Paul from Boston in 2011 and fortuitously discovered HPMS while exploring our new neighborhood.   I currently work at the University of Minnesota's Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action.  Prior to that, I practiced employment law in Boston.  My family looks forward to another great year at HPMS and to meeting all of the new families.

Carrie Brand, Secretary

As an alum of the school, HPMS has always held a special place in my heart and I am honored to serve on the Board.  My husband Tony and I have 3 girls – Lauren (3.5) in Jenny’s class, Sophia (2.5) in Gaby’s room, and Olivia (9 mo).  We moved back from Seattle last summer and live in Eagan.  I have an accounting degree from UW-Madison and an MBA from UT-Austin. In Seattle, I worked at Microsoft in the marketing and business development disciplines, but am currently staying home with my girls.

Lincoln Kallsen, Treasurer

I am the Director of Institutional Analysis in the Office of Budget and Finance at the University of Minnesota.  I am responsible for many budgetary and financial analysis projects at the campus and system level.  I have been with the University for 18 years in a variety of capacities, including overseeing capital planning, providing long-range financial forecasting, and participating in financial analysis of the University's child care center.  As a young child, I attended Montessori schools and am happy to be of service to Highland Park Montessori.

Wendy Warren, Adviser

HPMS is dear to my heart. I have worked for the school for 35 years: thirty of those years in my favorite position as classroom teacher, and the last five years focusing on the school’s administration.  In addition, I chaired the board of directors at the Montessori Training Center of Minnesota from 2002-2012. Currently, I mentor several local Montessori teachers, and substitute in area classrooms. I am pleased to offer advice and guidance to this HPMS board of directors.
